What a summer this had been for roses. I have been oohing and ahing non-stop since late May. They are larger, prettier and more abundant than any previous summer. The recent series of heatwaves in Vienna has taken a bit of the oomph out of them, but I can see more buds and so there should be plenty more on their way by the time I return from heatwave free Scotland in a couple of weeks. A friend recently gave me a brand new rose, with the dramatic name of “Heathcliff” as a very thoughtful present. Here’s hoping he (although I always think of roses as “she”) is inspired by the existing stellar cast to perform well.
