Back to the Bregenzerwald

Well we didn’t stay away for long. The mountains beckoned us back and we spent another weekend hiking around this stunning corner of Austria.

The weather was mixed, but we were lucky and managed to time our walks with breaks in the rain.

We had close up encounters with iron casts of the sculptor Antony Gromley, 100 of which are dotted around the Bregenzerwald, all at 2,039 meters above sea level. These form part of his project “Horizon Field” with the Kunsthaus Bregenz.

I had already seen a couple of these on a skiing trip;  the life size statues are really affecting, as they seem so at home and yet so incongruous. People rarely stand naked and still for long periods of time in the mountains. There is something a bit threatening and also very vulnerable about these figures and I was really pleased to finally be near one with my camera.

I attach a link to a full description of the project.
